Message from the 2012 Chair
Amy Walker

Dear Division Members,

As the 2012 Chair of the AVS Applied Surface Science Division, I want to wish everyone a healthy, productive and successful 2012! This year I will work to ensure that ASSD continues to be one of the most active and vibrant divisions of AVS, and one that best reflects the needs of its members. I would like to thank 2011 Chair Vincent Smentowski, 2011 Program Chair Ian Gilmore, and retiring members-at-large Alberto Herrera-Gomez and Scott Bryan for all their contributions to improving ASSD. As past Chair, Vincent Smentowski continues his service to ASSD by serving as the ASSD Program Chair for the AVS International Symposium in Tampa, FL. It has been a true honor to work with Vincent, Ian, Alberto and Scott, and I look forward to their guidance in future.

There are many ways to get involved in ASSD and AVS. Technical programming is a significant strength of ASSD and we invite you to keep it strong by not only providing suggestions for ASSD sessions but also by volunteering to be session moderators at the AVS Symposium. You can also become involved in organizing the Surface Analysis XX and Quantitative Surface Analysis (QSA) meetings. This year Surface Analysis ‘12 will be held at Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, Richland WA from June 19th to June 22nd. If you would like to hold a future Surface Analysis XX meeting, there are guidelines on the ASSD website (http://divisions.avs.org/assd/Meetings.html).

I would also like for your help. In 2015 we are going to be celebrating ASSD’s 30th Anniversary, and the ASSD Executive Committee is beginning to plan our activities to mark this anniversary. How would YOU like the anniversary celebrated? Some possible activities:

·         Special sessions at the AVS International Symposium honoring our founding members and up-coming leaders?

·         Create a new early investigator award?

Please contact me (or other ASSD Executive Committee members) directly if you would like to participate in ASSD activities, share ideas, offer suggestions, or voice concerns. You can also go to the Volunteer in AVS site (http://avs.org/membership-volunteer.aspx).

Best Wishes,
