The mission of the Advanced Surface Engineering Division (ASED) is to provide a continuing forum for fostering the understanding of advanced surface engineering technologies and to promote coating integration in materials design and engineering.

ASED organizes and supports conferences, symposia and workshops, to promote discussion of basic aspects of surface's science, technology and engineering. Areas of interest are best defined through description of topical Symposia in the annual ICMCTF conference (April 26 - April 30, 2010, San-Diego, CA), which is organized and sponsored by ASED:

A link to the ICMCTF website (see left) will take you to detailed information (as soon as it becomes available) on these Symposia and special topic conferences.

The ASED runs its own technical program at the annual AVS International Symposium under the Surface Engineering topic. Most "hot" topics of surface engineering are a prime focus of this program, which, therefore, changes every year reflecting the pulsation of the ASED community's interests. These are: MAX-phases (introduced in 2005), glancing angle deposition (introduced in 2006), multilayer, functionally gradient, nanocomposite, and self-assembled coatings; wear protection and tribochemistry; nanomechanical and nanotribology testing; coating thermal stability and environment friendly coatings for corrosion protection; coating design and modeling, deposition process diagnostic and growth control.

ASED is truly a member-oriented division. Each member's opinion is valid and each member is encouraged to bring new initiatives to ASED activities. Technical sessions of both ICMCTF and SE AVS are flexible and changeable. They entirely depend on members volunteering for session organization, finding speakers and attracting the audience.

AWARDS

ASED encourages each member to take advantage of various level awards offered by the AVS. Please contact the ASED award
nomination committee for further details.

ASED offers its own awards and is willing to consider requests from researchers active in fields relevant to the ASED for travel support funds to enable them to present their results at international meetings. Some of current awards:
